Hanoi’s authorities and people should step up efforts to develop a healthy cultural environment and raise the image of civilised Hanoians in order to make the capital a leading cultural centre in the country.

Politburo member and Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi made this request at a conference in Hanoi on May 29 to review the 15-year implementation of the Resolution on building and developing a modern Vietnamese national culture.

Secretary Nghi urged the city administration to preserve and develop Thang Long’s old-age culture and speed up the implementation of the ‘People United to Create a Cultural Lifestyle in their Living Areas’ campaign.

Over the past years, Hanoi has significantly preserved and promoted the traditional, time-honoured cultural values of Thang Long, as well as fostering cultural exchanges with other cities in and outside the country.

The city authorities have spent thousands of billions of Vietnamese dong upgrading cultural institutions such as the Hanoi Museum , the Hanoi City Library, the Dai Nam and Kim Dong theatres, and the Hoa Binh Park , to meet city dwellers’ increasing demand for entertainment.

At the conference, the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee awarded certificates of merit to 47 collectives and 28 individuals that have made significant contributions to the city’s cultural development.-VNA
