The Sun Daily newspaper of Malaysia recently ran an article on tourism in Hanoi, which came out on top as the world’s most affordable destination in prestigious travel website TripAdvisor’s annual TripIndex report.

The newspaper cited the report as writing that a three-night stay in the capital city of Vietnam costs 732 USD per couple or 366 USD per person, in which dinner averages 45 USD per couple and a one-night stay at a four-star hotel is 87 USD.

In this year’s TripIndex report, Southeast Asia emerged as the world’s most affordable region for travelling with Hanoi, Thailand’s Bangkok, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur and the Philippines’ Manila taking four spots on the top ten list.

The average cost for travelling throughout the region is 28 percent less (or 320 USD) than Dallas, the cheapest US city on the TripIndex.

Other cheap tourist cities include Warsaw of Poland, Sharm el Sheikh of Egypt, India’s Mumbai, Portugal’s Libson, Morocco’s Marrakech and Germany’s Berlin.

The TripIndex looks at the average cost of a three-night trip in 60 key tourist cities around the world. The costs include hotel, attractions, a round-trip taxi ride, lunch and dinner.

In March, Hanoi came fourth in the world’s top 25 travel destinations in the website’s 2015 Travellers’ Choice Awards.

The city is described on TripAdvisor as a place with long-standing charm and beauty with its preserved Old Quarter and assorted monuments and colonial architecture with mixed modern designs.-VNA
