The capital city of Hanoi will switch off its lighting system in a number of public areas and streets from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on March 31 to support this year’s Earth Hour.

Sponsored by the World Wide Fund for Nature and first implemented in 2007 in Australia , the event aims to raise people’s awareness of saving power and using it more efficiently to reduce the negative impacts of climate change.

The lights in Hanoi ’s key areas surrounding Sword Lake , Ngoc Son temple, The Huc bridge and Hanoi Opera House will go down for an hour.

To commemorate this annual event, Hoi An city of the central province of Quang Nam will turn off the lights for an hour between 8.30pm to 9.30pm on March 26.

Candles will be lit and various cultural activities will be organised, including the release of flower boats on the Hoai river and artistic street performances./.
