Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi citizens have been encouraged to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical equipment for one hour on March 19 in response to the 2016 Earth Hour campaign.

A switch-off ceremony is scheduled to be held at the August Revolution Square between 8:30pm and 9:30pm the same day.

In 2015, the capital city saved 241,000 kWh of electricity, worth around 400 million VND (18,800 USD), thanks to the lights-off event.

Earth Hour campaign was first launched in Vietnam in 2009.

More than 1,000 businesses and organisations across the country have joined the effort.

The country saved 520,000 kWh of electricity worth 850 million VND or approximately 40,000 USD last year.

Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet.

Under the theme “ Small Action , Big Meaning,” Earth Hour 2016 encourages individuals, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.-VNA
