HCM City (VNA) – The People’s Council of Ho Chi Minh City opened the 20th session, the last in the eighth tenure (2011 – 2016), on December 8.

Chairwoman of the council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam said despite numerous challenges, HCM City has continued performing its role as the locomotive of the southern economic region as well as for the entire nation over the last five years.

At the four-day session, the council members will set up goals, missions and solutions for 2016 basing on the resolution of the recent 10th municipal Party Congress and on the real situation in the city.

They are scheduled to consider the dismissal and elect the chairperson, vice chairpersons and five members of the municipal People’s Committee, the official added.

The People’s Council deputies will also spend one day questioning authorised agencies and individuals about issues of public concern.

HCM City has fulfilled 23 of the 25 socio-economic targets for 2015 set by the council, posting stable and fair economic growth. Local gross domestic product this year grew by 9.8 percent from 2014, the highest year-on-year pace in three straight years.

Its consumer price index rise is estimated at 1 percent while 267.95 trillion VND (11.92 billion USD) was collected for the State budget. The city raked in some 62.82 billion USD in export revenue and welcomed 4.6 million foreign tourists in 2015.-VNA
