The “HeForShe” campaign, designed to raise the sense of responsibility among men and boys for eliminating discrimination against women and girls, was launched in Hanoi on March 6 in anticipation of International Women’s Day on March 8.

The movement will be carried out between March and October 2015 by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the Vietnam Volunteer Information Resource Centre (VVIRC).

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Shoko Ishikawa, a representative from the UN Women in Vietnam, said the campaign aims to call on people to join efforts to eliminate gender prejudice against women and girls and bring about equality.

President of the Vietnam Youth Federation Nguyen Phi Long called on Vietnamese youth to take part in the drive to promote gender equality.

Since the movement burst into life in September 2014 in New York, numerous Heads of state, chief executive officers of multinational groups, and hundreds of thousands of men from 169 countries worldwide have pledged to become pioneers in the drive.

The campaign has stimulated over 1.2 billion dialogues and debates on social media and is creating promising changes in the global gender equality movement.-VNA
