Some 30,000 followers of the Hoa Hao Buddhist chapter in southern Vinh Long province have joined efforts with authorities at grassroots level to donate around 20.2 billion VND (nearly 953,000 USD) to charitable activities and social works.

Their efforts were praised by provincial officials at a June 12 meeting participated by nearly 100 representatives of the Executive Board of the chapter at all levels, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Hoa Hao Buddhist sect’s foundation.

Local followers have also helped build more than 250 houses, a 9.5 km of rural roads and approximately 60 small bridges between villages.

Doan Bach Thuy, a representative of the chapter, said its executive board at all levels will continue to realise the policies and laws of the Party and State, especially those related to religious activities, in order to help strengthen national unity.

Founded in 1939 in southern An Giang province, the Hoa Hao Buddhist sect has developed in 19 provinces and cities nationwide with over 2 million followers.-VNA
