Jakarta (VNA) – With the target of manufacturing 2.5 million units of automobile by 2020, Indonesia has become an attractive investment destination for the automotive industry.

Indonesian Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto said Indonesia manufactures around 1.1 million units of vehicles a year, with 200,000 of them being exported.

The industry has also employed a workforce of around three million, he added.

According to the minister, the auto industry has become one of the main sectors in Indonesia’s national industry policy, and it contributes significantly to the country’s GDP.

He pointed out that an economic growth rate of above five percent could benefit the industry amid the sluggish global economy.

Mitsubishi Motor Krama Yudha (MMKI) has inaugurated a new auto factory in Cikarang, West Java.

MMKI said with an investment of 7.5 billion rupee (116.4 million USD), the firm will have a production capacity of 160 thousand units per year and use a workforce of 3,000 people.

At present, there are three big auto manufacturers operating in West Java, including MMKI, Suzuki and Shanghai Wuling.-VNA
