Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesia needs stricter measures to stop illegal fishing on its waters, said Susi Pudjiastuti, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on January 17.

Indonesian authorities sunk 217 foreign boats that illegally entered and fished in its waters last year, according to Pudjiastuti, saying that the policy has reduced illegal fishing.

Indonesia is a large island country with about 17,000 islands. President Joko Widodo declared war against illegal fishing and instructed authorities to apply severe measures since he took office in October 2014.-VNA
