Indonesian authorities are actively preparing for the 26 th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 26) scheduled for November 11-22 this year.

The region’s largest sports event is expected to attract athletes from the 10 ASEAN member countries, who will compete in 44 sports for 454 sets of medals.

According to Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Andi Mallarangeng, SEA Games 26 will offer a chance to Indonesia to represent its role as the ASEAN Chair 2011 as well as its number one position in sports in the region.

Therefore, the Indonesian government has instructed all levels and branches to focus resources for the success of the regional sports event and of the Indonesian sports sector, he said.

He added that the Indonesian government had recently sent a high-ranking delegation to examine construction works for SEA Games 26 in Palembang , the capital of southern Sumatra province, one of the two venues where competitions would take place, besides Jakarta .

Around 2 trillion rupiah (232 million USD) was estimated to be allocated for the SEA Games 26, said Andi.

According to President of Indonesia’s SEA Games 26 Organising Committee Rachmat Gobel, the committee was recruiting close to 3,800 volunteers for this event./.
