Jakarta(VNA) – The Indonesian Government has tightened security nationwide to ensure safety during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan said on December 22 that police and security forces have been deployed at important places.

People are, specially, encouraged to engage in security ensuring efforts by raising alertness and informing the authorised forces whenever spotting any suspicious signs.

He added that increased security at this time does not relate to the recent arrest of nine suspected terrorists.

Earlier, National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti confirmed that Indonesian police had arrested nine suspected terrorists in Central Java, West Java and East Java. Some of them are allegedly ex-Jemaah Islamiyah members while others had links with IS.

Indonesia said it will deploy around 150,000 security personnel across the country to safeguard public places considered to be at high risk of terrorist attacks during the upcoming Christmas and New Year events.-VNA
