The 80th General Assembly of Interpol opened in Hanoi on Oct. 31, drawing the participation of nearly 200 policemen from member countries.

Officials and experts will discuss a wide range of issues at the four-day event, including assessing the implementation of resolutions on combating crime, exchanging experiences in preventing transnational crime and setting orientations for Interpol’s future, in line with globalisation and international integration.

The event will also ratify important resolutions on police cooperation and elect the organisation’s Executive Committee.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the Vietnamese Government always attaches special importance to working with Interpol.

He also said located in the central region of Asia and the Pacific, Vietnam is directly affected by the complicated crimes that originate from countries in the region and across the world.

“We are aware that transnational crime prevention requires concerted efforts among countries and global police cooperation needs to be strengthened through Interpol to better fight these crimes”, the deputy PM said.

Interpol President Khoo Boon Hui said the General Assembly was an opportunity to collectively review the security landscape and adopt a law enforcement approach that considers both national and global perspectives.

“Criminals are quick to take advantage of rapid technological developments and the prevalence of the Internet, and we should anticipate cybercrime to grow in scale, sophistication and impact,” he said.

The President also said he was impressed by the development of Vietnam’s security forces.
