Nearly 240,000 locals in a number of Mekong Delta localities are expected to benefit from a 510 billion VND (24.28 million USD) irrigation project along the O Mon and Xa No canals in Can Tho city by 2015.

According to Dao Anh Dung, Vice Chairman of Can Tho People’s Committee, the project, which has entered the final phase in Hau Giang and Kien Giang provinces and Can Tho city, will see the construction of a 115km dyke system which will be accessible to vehicles.

It is expected to make travel easier for local residents during the flood season and provide irrigation and drainage for 45,530ha of paddy fields, aquaculture farms and approximately 8,000ha of fruit farms in the region, he said.
