In the September 4 meeting, they discussed escalated tensions between China and some ASEAN countries over territorial disputes in the East Sea.

The officials affirmed progress in cooperation in maritime security, disaster prevention, and enhancement of economic connectivity in the 10-member ASEAN among other issues.

The two sides agreed to ensure the success of a Japan-ASEAN summit to be held on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in November in Myanmar.
