Senior officials from Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have gathered in Tokyo for a forum between the two sides.

In the September 4 meeting, they discussed escalated tensions between China and some ASEAN countries over territorial disputes in the East Sea.

The officials affirmed progress in cooperation in maritime security, disaster prevention, and enhancement of economic connectivity in the 10-member ASEAN among other issues.

The two sides agreed to ensure the success of a Japan-ASEAN summit to be held on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in November in Myanmar.

Speaking at the meeting, Soeung Rathchavy, Cambodia's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs said ASEAN highly appreciates Japan's important role and significant contribution to building the ASEAN Community.

She said the Japan-ASEAN strategic partnership represents one of the key pillars in the present evolving regional architecture, adding that the two sides will work closely in delivering the important goal of forming the ASEAN Community by 2015 and beyond.
