Three Japanese corporations, Toshiba, Hitachi and Itochu, on March 18 announced that they had signed a joint contract to provide and install an intelligent traffic system (ITS) to Vietnam.

Under the contract, the Japanese side will provide the electronic toll collection (ETC) system and equipment for monitoring and controlling transportation on the road, with a total cost of 4 billion yen (39.41 million USD) lent by the Japanese Government.

The system and equipment will be put into operation on the North-South expressway and its 55km Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay section by 2017.

Toshiba will provide intelligent traffic equipment for the system while Hitachi is in charge of the installation and Itochu is running business-related activities.

The ITS will help reduce traffic tie-ups on the expressway and the aforesaid section, and increase the road capacity.-VNA
