Kien Giang (VNA) – A blood donation event took place in Phu Quoc district’s Duong Dong town in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on July 6, marking the beginning of the 2016 Red Journey campaign in the South.

At the event, donors from all walks of life contributed more than 350 blood units in total for patients at Kien Giang general hospital.

On the occasion, the campaign organising board visited and presented gifts to needy patients who are under treatment at the hospital.

Themed “Connecting Vietnamese bloodstream”, this year’s Red Journey campaign incorporates 27 separate blood donation events across 27 cities and provinces nationwide.

Organised for the first time in 2013, The Red Journey has popularised blood donation activities to around one million people, according to Head of the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Dr. Nguyen Anh Tri.

Vietnam collected 1.15 million units of blood in 2015, surpassing the yearly target by 17.8 percent and up 9.7 percent from 2014. The figure, of which more than one million units came from volunteers, met 60 percent of overall demand for medical treatment.-VNA
