The Central Highlands province of Kon Tum should turn its set objectives and tasks into specific socio-economic development programmes and plans in order to improve the living standards for local ethnic minority people.

Party General Secretary and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong made the request at a working session with the provincial leaders on April 17 during his working trip to the Central Highlands provinces from April 16-17.

“Kon Tum should make the best use of its potentials and strengths in natural resources, land and forests as well as develop industrial trees with high economic values,” he said.

The Party leader also urged the province to address thoroughly vital issues for localities, ensure sufficient cultivation land for local people, pay attention to irrigation development, forestation and poverty reduction, narrow development gaps, and improve the intellectual standards of the people.

While emphasising the strategic position in defence and security of the Central Highlands in general and Kon Tum province in particular, Trong expressed his wish that the Party committees at all levels, authorities and people in the province will always promote solidarity and unanimity among people, effectively carry out ethnic, religious and mass mobilisation activities, maintain stability at grassroots units, and shatter all sabotage schemes of hostile forces.

According to Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Ha Ban, despite being a border mountainous locality with a lot of difficulties, Kon Tum province has recorded achievements in socio-economic development and improving people’s living standards, with per-capita income reaching over 13 million VND per year and export turnover increasing to nearly 60 million USD.

The province’s economic growth reached a record high over the past 10 years and its State budget collection exceeded 1.3 trillion VND.

Preparations for the upcoming 13 th National Assembly and People’s Council elections for the 2011-2016 term in Kon Tum province have been made in an active and serious manner, Ban said.
