HCM City (VNA) – American blockbuster “Kong: Skull Island” has set a new record in box office revenues in Vietnam after snagging 18.2 billion VND (798,200 USD) from the opening day on March 10 and early screenings on March 9 night.

According to distribution partner CJ CGV Vietnam, more than 162,000 moviegoers flocked to cinemas nationwide to see the Hollywood monster movie, the first of its kind shot in Vietnam.

It has become the film with the biggest opening of all time in the country, a representative from CJ CGV Vietnam said.

“Kong: Skull Island” by director Jordan Vogt-Roberts tells the story of a group of explorers who go in search of the birthplace of the lord of giant apes.

The film was shot at multiple locations throughout Vietnam, such as Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh, Van Long Natural Reserve and Trang An Complex in Ninh Binh, and the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh.

This is seen as a great opportunity for Vietnam to introduce its natural landscapes to the world and promote local tourism.

On March 10, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism appointed director Jordan Volt-Roberts as Vietnam’s tourism ambassador for a four-year term of 2017-2020.

Vogt-Roberts is going to receive his appointment decision on March 13, making him the first-ever foreign director holding the post.-VNA
