The Lao National Commission for Drug Control and Supervision held a ceremony in Vientiane on June 25 to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26).

Chairman of the commission Kou Chansina reported that over the past year, 65.6 percent of households and 37.9 percent of high schools in the country have been recognised as drug-free.

During the period, police dealt with nearly 1,600 drug cases with over 2,100 offenders. They also seized 3.84 million amphetamine pills, 238.5kg of heroin, 1.5 tonnes of dried marijuana, and 22kg of methamphetamine, he said.

The official thanked other countries and international organisations for cooperation with Laos in its drug fight, and called for more assistance from them.

At the event, held in coordination with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, a drug haul worth 17.5 million USD, including 5.4 million amphetamine pills and 3 tonnes of dried marijuana, was destroyed.-VNA
