Laos plans to expand its acreage of coffee cultivation to 130,000ha by 2025, much more than its current 80,000ha.

The scheme is part of a strategy to develop the coffee industry as Laos wants to join the International Coffee Organisation soon.

The country is studying 60 new varieties of coffee and raising capital for production and processing, not only at Bolaven plateau in southern Laos but in northern provinces also.

In the fiscal year 2013, Laos harvested 27,000 tonnes of coffee worth a total 67 million USD.

In the first half of the fiscal year 2014, the country shipped 21,800 tonnes of coffee abroad, raking in 47 million USD.

The industry is generating stable jobs for nearly 20,000 households and 300,000 workers at home.-VNA
