The Malaysian Election Commission (EC) has invited observers from ASEAN countries to monitor the country’s 13th general election on May 5, said an EC official on April 24.

EC Deputy Chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said observers will arrive from Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines, along with those from the ASEAN Secretariat.

The election will see 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state legislature seats contested.

Police authorities have expressed concerns over the rising violence in the run-up of the May general election, asking supporters of the Barisan Nasional, or National Front and the opposition take part in election related activities peacefully.-VNA
