Malaysian Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi said on July 7 that Malaysia will propose setting up an ASEAN Defence Industry Council to promote regional cooperation in this field expand the market for member countries’ defence products.

Talking to reporters after chairing the Malaysian Defence Industry Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Hamidi said that he will make an official proposal at the grouping’s Defence Ministers’ Meeting in November this year.


He added that he had already conveyed the idea to his ASEAN counterparts and plans to discuss the issue during his upcoming visits to ASEAN countries.


The Malaysian government attaches great importance to the defence industry and the country’s Defence Ministry has also put forward its development plans for the next five years./.
