Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh has urged localities in the Mekong Delta to pay attention to agricultural production restructuring and intensify the application of scientific and technological advancement to production.

Ninh, who is head of the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region, made the request at the committee’s conference to review its operations in 2013 and put forth tasks for 2014 in Can Tho city on January 15.

He emphasised the need to choose key products associated with market demands and strengthen the connectivity between farmers and businesses.

The localities should focus investment in underprivileged communes with poor infrastructure, he added.

The committee has set targets of economic growth of 9-10 percent, total export turnover of 11 billion USD and average income per capita of 37 million VND (1,739 USD) in 2014.

The region is also striving to reduce the rate of poor households to 6 percent this year. The figure was 7.24 percent in 2013.-VNA
