HCM City (VNA) - A park commemorating 52 commandos, who sacrificed their lives to occupy and protect Rach Chiec Bridge during the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, was inaugurated in An Phu Commune, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City on December 31.

The memorial site was built in 12,000 square metres of land at a total cost of 21 billion VND (934,000 USD). The site includes a 6,000-square-metre memorial park and an area for flower lantern release.

The construction shows the respect of the municipal party, authorities and residents for the fallen soldiers while helping educate young generations about the nation’s struggle for independence.

From April 27-30, 1975, commando units Z23 and Z22 of Brigade 316 and Battalion 81 made their concerted efforts to occupy Rach Chiec Bridge- an important point in the northeastern gate of Sai Gon, paving the way for revolutionary forces to liberate the city.-VNA
