As many as 1,100 drug users in the Red River Delta province of Nam Dinh will be treated with methadone – which is used to gradually replace heroin.

The information was released at a meeting to start the implementation of a project on the issue in Nam Dinh province on Nov. 1.

The 10 billion VND project will be divided into two phases with drug addicts being treated at four establishments in Nam Dinh city, Xuan Truong and Giao Thuy districts.

The project will receive funding from the World Bank and LIFE-GAP project, a cooperative project between the Ministry of Health and the US Centre for Disease Control.

By August 2010, about 4,000 people were detected as HIV positive in Nam Dinh province, 1,700 of whom developed AIDS. Of the total, 78 percent were drug users.

Currently, the province has more than 6,600 drug addicts, including 1,833 under management./.
