Typhoon Mirinae killed at least four people, injured 13 others and caused two missing after it hit Vietnam’s central coastal provinces on November 2.

The death toll and injuries were just initial accounts, the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control said at its meeting in Hanoi on November 3.

Typhoon Mirinae, the eleventh to hit Vietnam so far this year, pulled down 154 houses and damaged 2,489 others in the central provinces of Phu Yen and Binh Dinh and the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak .

Apart from damaging over 18,000 ha of rice fields and subsidiary crops, Mirinae stranded traffic and blocked communication, causing difficulties for rescue and relief aid activities.

Torrential rains caused the Ha Thanh river in Binh Dinh province to swell and submerge 15 riverside residential areas in Van Canh and Tuy Phuoc districts and Quy Nhon city, threatening the safety of the local population.

At the request of the provincial authorities, early on November 3, soldiers and officers of the Military Zone 5 rushed to Tuy Phuoc district to join in efforts to rescue and evacuate people marooned by flooding.

More rains are forecast for central provinces from Thua Thien-Hue to Binh Thuan and the Central Highlands . Strong wind is anticipated in the central highland provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong./.
