High schools throughout Ho Chi Minh City plan to admit 97,222 students to the 10th grade for the upcoming school year, according to the city Department of Education and Training.

This is an increase of 6,304 students compared to the 2010-2011 school year.

At a meeting between the department and People's Committee held on April 13, city officials said they would build 1,080 more new classrooms in order to meet demand.

Hua Ngoc Thuan, Deputy Chairman of the People's Committee, asked to speed up the building progress of Nguyen Thi Dinh School for the gifted in gymnastics.

At the meeting, the department also presented a plan to admit students to the first grade and sixth grade.

Like last school year, all six-year-old children will be admitted to the city's primary schools.

There are 102,119 six-year-old children in HCM City , according to city authorities.

The secondary schools in the city will not hold admission exams for students who complete the fifth grade.

They will enrol the students based on their marks for the second semester in the fifth grade.

Secondary schools are expected to admit a total of 92,714 students to the sixth grade./.
