Myanmar’s President U Thein Sein pledged to hold a free and fair general election and maintain political stability in the transition at period from pre- to post-election.

In a televised speech on September 2, Myanmar President called on major political parties to pay attention to and obey frameworks and regulations issued by the Union Election Committee.

The President also urged parties not to make provocative statements that could harm national unity and solidarity.

As far as the peace process is concerned, the Myanmar President affirmed that the government would continue to hold talks with ethnic minority militant groups to achieve the National Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).

He emphasised the need to start political dialogues immediately after the signing of the NCA.

The Myanmar President underlined that the 2015 general election, which is scheduled to take place on November 8, is an important step in the transition to democracy.-VNA
