Myanmar President U Thein Sein and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra discussed the development of the Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on December 17, shortly after the latter arrived in Dawei, southern Myanmar.

It was Yingluck’s first visit to Dawei SEZ since the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop the zone in May, 2008.

According to official sources, the two leaders also inspected other related investment activities.

On the sidelines of November’s 21 st ASEAN Summit in Cambodia, Thai and Myanmar leaders issued a joint declaration reaffirming that some priority projects will be completed in 2015.

Accordingly, Thailand is responsible for developing infrastructure, including roads, deep seaports, industrial zones, power plants, water supply and treatment systems, communications and high speed trains in Daiwei SEZ.

The two nations established a joint committee to accelerate the comprehensive development of Dawei SEZ and relevant projects during a visit to Thailand by Myanmar Vice President U Nyan Tun in November.

The project is being executed by Italian-Thai Development Company and six local contractors.-VNA
