The Norwegian Ministry of Industry, Trade and Fisheries paid a fact-finding visit to the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap on March 22 to seek cooperation opportunities and to introduce local exports to the European market.

During a working session with the Norwegian delegation, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Hung highlighted local strength in rice farming and seafood, noting that Dong Thap tops all Vietnamese localities in terms of its tra fish output – which reaches 386,000 tonnes a year.

Hung said the province hopes to receive assistance from Norway in farming and processing tra fish as well as applying cutting-edge technology to raise quality and quantity. He added it is also willing to learn from Norway’s experiences of developing the market.

Norwegian Deputy Minister Amund Dronen said he will discuss the province’s suggestions with agencies from his country, adding that their businesses treasure collaboration with Vietnam and have high confidence in the strength of ties between the countries.

After the session, the Norwegian delegation visited the Vinh Hoan Corporation, which specialises in processing tra fish for export.

At present, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation is funding a project helping Vietnam improve tra fish production and the local trade value chain./.
