Hanoi (VNA) – Former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo, on July 21, was freed after nearly five years in detention at a military hospital near the capital Manila.

Earlier, on July 19, the country’s Supreme Court dismissed a embezzlement case against her due to a lack of evidence.

Arroyo, 69, was charged with embezzlement in connection with 366 million PHP (​8.8 million USD) in state lottery funds.

New Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who took office on June 30, had said he was willing to grant amnesty to her.-VNA
