Philippine military declares humanitarian cease-fire in Marawi

Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippine military on June 25 began to halt air and ground offensive against Islamic militants in southern Marawi city to allow residents to celebrate the end of the Ramadan festival.

Military spokesperson Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said the humanitarian pause took effect at 6:00 am on June 25 (Philippine time) and will last for eight hours. 

However, the cease-fire will be lifted immediately if the militants open fire or threaten troops and civilians, he added.

About 230 militants, 59 soldiers and 26 civilians have been killed in fighting in Marawi. More than 309,000 people have been displaced in Marawi and nearby areas.-VNA
