Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines on February 2 closed 23 mines and suspended operations at five others for illegal logging and causing river contamination.

Most of the mines are nickel producers that account for half of the country’s nickel ore output.

According to Environment Secretary Gina Lopez, the mines pose threats to the local water supply.

The Philippines is a leading global supplier of nickel ore.-VNA
