Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippines will push forwards six priorities as it takes over the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2017, which also coincides with the bloc’s 50th founding anniversary, officials have said.

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said at a press conference on January 5 that the priorities include a people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN; peace and stability in the region; maritime security and cooperation; inclusive innovation and growth; and ASEAN as a model of regionalism and a global player.

The theme of ASEAN 2017 is “We are partners for change, engaging the world”, Andanar added.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Enrique Manalo, said the milestone event is an occasion for ASEAN to reflect on its success and achievements during the last 50 years and to prepare for new challenges ahead in the region.

He noted that, to carry out the ASEAN 2017 priorities, the Philippines will be hosting around 100 meetings throughout selected cities and regions of the country.-VNA
