Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has stressed that reducing traffic accidents and traffic jams is the responsibility of every person.

PM Dung made the statement while delivering a radio message when he visited Radio Voice of Vietnam on Dec. 27.

Traffic accidents and traffic jams are a pressing social issue, PM Dung said. “Vietnam has taken measures to ensure traffic safety and minimise traffic jams and the country has made certain achievements, however, traffic accidents still happen every day, killing 30 people and injuring dozens of others a day”.

As the result, the Government has designated 2012 the year for traffic safety, PM Dung said.

In his message, the Prime Minister also emphasised “each person should be responsible for themselves, for their families, friends and the whole society and the first thing one can do is to follow traffic regulations”.

The Prime Minister also requested ministries, branches and authorities to give direction to the implementation of the Government’s urgent and long-term measures from the very first days of the new year, in order to reduce traffic accidents and casualties by 5-10 percent a year as well ease traffic jams in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City .

A ceremony to launch an action plan for Traffic Safety Year 2012 will be held on January 1, 2012./.
