Can Tho (VNA) - The Sponsoring Association for Poor Patients in the Southwestern Region has mobilised more than 50 billion VND (2.23 million USD) since its establishment in June this year.

The figure was released by Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for the South Western Region Nguyen Phong Quang at a press briefing on November 5 in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.

The amount has benefited thousands of needy people in the provinces of Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, in terms of homes for impoverished families, scholarships for students, medical treatment fees, free medicine and health care tools for low-income patients.

The association’s funds also helped build rural roads, bridges and schools. It aims to cover surgery fees for 82 children born with cardiovascular diseases and heart surgery fees for 36 other patients in the region.

It is expected to provide financial aid to build 60 houses, issue free health check-ups and medicine and give out scholarships in the province of Tra Vinh.

The association plans to offer practical help to other provinces and cities in the Southwestern region.-VNA
