As many as 211 prisoners in Hanoi were granted clemency on the occasion of the upcoming anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and National Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day.

Of the prisoners, 60 were freed ahead of their release date, while the others received 3-12 month reductions to their sentences.

On the occasion, nine prisoners in the Mekong Delta’s Vinh Long province were released early, and 14 have their prison terms reduced.

The clemency not only reflects the Government’s policy of compassion, but also encourages prisoners to reform themselves so that they can return to society sooner.-VNA
