The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) on July 14 submitted three plan options for the construction of a third runway at Noi Bai International Airport to the Ministry of Transport.

In the first plan, the new runway will be built at the south of the airport, alongside passenger terminals, an apron, a taxiway and other facilities to ensure the airport’s total capacity of 50 million passengers a year.

The total investment cost for this option is estimated at 75.987 trillion (3.5 billion USD), in which 40.8 trillion VND is used for site clearance.

The second plan is to place the runway to the north while passenger terminals and the apron are placed to the west.

Estimated expense of the plan is cut down by half at 38.8 trillion VND (1.78 billion USD), in which site clearance makes up 11 trillion VND.

In the third plan, the new runway is also built at the north of the airport alongside supporting facilities.

This option, however, is said to put huge pressure on Vo Van Kiet street when the number of passenger through the airport reaches 50 million passengers per year.

According to the CAAV, the second plan is the best option.
