Opportunities and challenges in informing the public of nuclear power development were tabled at a workshop in Hanoi on September 10.

The event was co-organised by the Atomic Energy Department under the Ministry of Science and Technology and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Addressing the workshop, Hoang Anh Tuan, head of the department, said that Vietnam is facing big challenges in popularising information on nuclear power development as it is building infrastructure for a nuclear power plant in the central province of Ninh Thuan .

Therefore, though this event, Vietnam can learn from international experience in the field, he said.

According to Brenda Paganonne from the IAEA’s Nuclear Energy Department, public information needs the openness and transparency of all stakeholders in order to create a trust among people in the safe operation of nuclear power plants.

This is also a challenge facing Vietnam during its development of nuclear power, she stressed.
As the public pay much attention to nuclear safety, the provision of adequate information for them will help the country win public support and consensus in building the Ninh Thuan Plant, said participants.-VNA
