Dr Mai Ngoc Tam from the centre said that the by-product proved effective when used as median strips on Nguyen Van Troi street in District 3 and furnishing Huynh Khuong Ninh Primary School in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Tam, due to rubber’s high elasticity, median strips for traffic lanes made by recycled rubber instead of cement and metals help reduce the level of injuries after collisions. Meanwhile, recycled rubber tiles and carpets are safer when people fall.
The production of median strips and tiles by recycled rubber estimates at 622,000 VND per metre and 149,000 VND per sq.m., respectively. While median strips made by cement will cost 650,000 VND per metre and metal at 1.7 million VND per metre.
The centre is finalising the technology to be used in making construction materials, Tam said.
Each year, the world discards around 5.5 million tonnes of tires which are difficult to disintegrate. At present, many countries in the world have recycled this waste./.
