As many as least 12,855 road accidents have occurred nationwide so far this year, killing 4,588 people and injuring 12,821 others.

These figures showed a year-on-year decline of 2,674 cases, 419 fatalities, and 3,167 injuries, thanks to drastic measures to ensure traffic safety and order by the police force.

The reasons for accidents are predominantly speeding, driving in the wrong lane, and people driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police have handled over 2,500,000 traffic violations and collected fines of more than 1.4 trillion VND (65.8 million USD).

Last year, the country recorded nearly 29,400 traffic accidents, which claimed the lives of 9,369 people and injured 29,500 others, according to the National Committee for Traffic Safety.-VNA
