Russia has appointed senior diplomat Mikhail Yurievich Galuzin as its new ambassador to Indonesia and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Galuzin has arrived in Jakarta and will soon present his credentials to Indonesian President and ASEAN General Secretary.

The 52-year-old career diplomat was previously stationed at the Russian Embassy in Japan and headed the third Department of Asia under the Russian Foreign Ministry in 2010, which deals with bilateral cooperation with South East Asian countries.

According to the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics, two-way trade between Indonesia and Russia surged to 2.54 billion USD in 2011, a huge jump from 774.88 million USD in 2009.

During the first eight months of this year, the figure hit 2.38 billion USD, up 47.36 per cent year on year, with shipment of Russian oil and gas products to Indonesia reaching 542.9 million USD.-VNA
