Hanoi (VNA) – A thematic seminar on the close linkage between IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) and the Internet of Things (IoT) industry took place in Hanoi on May 5.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications and head of the Committee of the National IPv6 Task Force Phan Tam cited a report of the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre, which said that the rate of connections via IPv6 in Vietnam neared 6 percent in March 2017, sometimes went up to 25 percent with more than 2.5 million users, making the country the second in Southeast Asia, behind Malaysia, and the fifth in Asia, behind India, Japan, Malaysia and Arab Saudi.

He said it is now time for Vietnam to catch up with the trend of technology in the world, but many challenges remain for the domestic IT sector.

Participants shared the latest information about IPv6, relevant policies in the 4.0 industrial revolution, e-government, and IPv6’s importance to ensure the safety of IoT technological solutions.

Statistics from Google showed that the rate of IPv6 usage worldwide currently stands at 20 percent and is forecast to hit 100 percent by 2019.

Experts predicted that when the world population hits 7.6 billion by 2020, 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet.

IPv6 is the upgraded version of IPv4, which will help deal with IPv4 exhaustion. It is expected to provide an important platform for the development of IoT, e-government, smart city and industrial revolution 4.0.-VNA
