Thanh Hoa (VNA) – The freezing weather from January 22-30 has caused severe damage to the central province of Thanh Hoa, especially agriculture, livestock, and seafood.

According to the preliminary statistics from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the recent cold spell has killed 538 cattle, taking the heaviest toll in Muong Lat, Ba Thuoc, Thuong Xuan, Lang Chanh, Quan Son and Quan Hoa districts.

The local seafood sector also recorded an economic loss of over 6 billion VND (270,000 USD). For example, up to 30 tonnes of white-legged shrimps in Tinh Gia, Quang Xuong, and Hoang Hoa districts frooze to death, causing an economic loss of around 3 billion VND (135,000 USD).

The chilly weather also caused severe damage to over 7,200 hectares of rice, the department said, adding that it has sent a number of delegations to direct livestock farmers on how to protect animals from the still cold conditions.

The department is also collecting data on the number of dead cattle and damaged rice fields to submit a report to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to put support policies in place for farmers.-VNA
