Singapore (VNA) – Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has proposed that Myanmar’s State Counsellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Aung San Suu Kyi serve as the spokesperson of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on international affairs.

ASEAN’s spokesperson will play a “guiding” role in the bloc’s conferences with other nations, especially at the Summit of the Group of Twenty (G20), the premier international forum for cooperation on global economic governance.

Myanmar’s Presidential Office spokesperson said the proposals were presented during a meeting between the Singaporean PM and Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw on June 7. In response, the Myanmar politician said she will do her utmost in contributing to the bloc’s relationship with the international community.

PM Lee Hsien Loong is on a three day visit to Myanmar from June 7 at the invitation of Myanmar’s President U Htin Kyaw. He is the first Asian leader to visit Myanmar since the nation’s new government took office on April 1.

The visit also marks the 50 th anniversary of diplomatic ties of Singapore and Myanmar .-VNA
