The situation in the Kokang region of Myanmar's northern Shan State is gradually calming, Lieutenant General Mya Tun Oo of the office of the Commander-in-Chief told a press briefing on February 21.

The Government of Myanmar’s armed forces will continue implementing measures to ensure security and stability in the portions of the Kokang region still experiencing armed clashes, Tun Oo said.

He also said that 54 of his soldiers lost their lives with another 100 injured, and about 72 members of the Kokang army died during the fighting.

A 90-day state of emergency was declared in Kokang on February 17 by the government after heavy fighting first broke out on February 9.

More than 30,000 people fled to neighboring China or other regions in Myanmar after the army launched a heavy onslaught against the rebels.-VNA
