Dong Van and Meo Vac border districts in the northernmost province of Ha Giang reportedly saw widespread snowfall on the night of January 12, with temperatures dropping to minus one degree Celsius.

Due to an intense cold spell, heavy snows were recorded in such communes as Lung Cu, Pho Bang, Pho La and Sung La of Dong Van, 1,600m above sea level. Ice in some places was over 10cm thick.

Meanwhile, mountain sides, roads and crops in all border communes of Meo Vac district like Thuong Phung, Xin Cai and Son Vi were capped with snow, causing difficulties for local people.

This is the second snowfall recorded in the area this winter, following an earlier one on December 15.

On January 13, the cold snap made temperatures in the neighbouring province of Lao Cai drop to 3.2 degrees Celsius.

Dense fog caused poor visibility on National Highway 4D and inter-provincial roads 1,200m above sea level, and caused some congestion on the O Quy Ho Pass.

Another cold spell is forecast to roll in on the night of January 13 and push temperatures in the region down further.-VNA
