A solid waste treatment plant officially went into operation on Ly Son Island in the central province of Quang Ngai on June 4 by the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) and the district People’s Committee of Ly Son.

The plant was selected as the first pilot solid waste treatment project in the island district by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Spanning two hectares , the plant has a total investment capital of over 30 billion VND (1.4 million USD) and an average capacity of 250- 500 kilograms of solid waste per hour.

According to the plan, the Department of Waste Management and Environmental Improvement will support the island district in operating through 2015. The plant will be handed over to local operators.

The factory will contribute to improving the environmental criteria in the new rural development programme in the island district, improving the living environment of people and coral reefs on the island.-VNA
