Cambodia’s Phnom Penh municipal police on October 21 held a special training course after the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) plans to organise a mass protest against the results of the July's election that handed victory to Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party.

According to Chuon Narin, deputy chief of the Phnom Penh municipal police,
about 2,000 policemen, armed with shields and batons, participated in the training, which aims to strengthen the force’s capacity of maintaining security and public order in the capital city.

The training at Freedom Park, the site of the planned protest, came after the opposition announced last week a three-day mass demonstration starting from October 23 with 20,000 to 50,000 participants, of this 20,000 will march to the United Nations office and several foreign embassies in Phnom Penh.

The Phnom Penh City Hall on October 18 also proclaimed the marching will not be allowed as the large number of participants will affect the traffic and public security, or lead to violent behaviours.

The National Election Committee recently released the final results of the July 28 election, confirming that the Cambodian People’s Committee won 68 seats while the CNRP took the remaining 55 seats.

The CNRP rejected the results and demanded the establishment of an independent probe committee.-VNA
