On September 15th, 1945, the first bulletins credited to a news agency of the new Vietnam, with the initials VNTTX in Vietnamese, VNA in English, and AVI in French, were circulated worldwide, delivering the historic Declaration of Independence read by President Ho Chi Minh at the Ba Dinh square to establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. That historic day became the founding day of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA).
After the reunification of the country in 1975, the VNA merged with the Liberation News Agency, which was established on October 12, 1960 as the mouthpiece of the Southern National Liberation Front and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. On May 12, 1977, the Vietnamese name of the agency was changed into TTXVN under Resolution No. 84/UBTVQH of the National Assembly Standing Committee of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
As a state-owned agency under the Government, the VNA functions as the official information channel of Vietnam, delivering official information and documents of the Communist Party and the State. It provides information for party leadership and state management; gathers and publicizes information through different media channels to people and organizations inside and outside the country.
To perform its assigned functions and tasks, besides its headquarters in Hanoi with units assisting the General Director, news and photo departments, newspapers, bulletins, technical and service centers, businesses and a publishing house, the VNA has representative offices in southern Ho Chi Minh City and central Da Nang city, domestic bureaus in 63 provinces and cities nationwide and 27 overseas bureaus located in all five continents of the globe.
The VNA has bilateral and multilateral cooperative relations with 42 foreign or international news agencies and media organizations. It is a member of several international news organizations, including the Non-Aligned News Agencies Pool (NANAP), the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), and the News Agencies World Congress (NAWC).
After more than six decades of development, under the leadership of the Vietnam Communist Party, the VNA has grown into a reliable source of information for the Party and the State, and a prestigious news agency in the region, looking forward to become a media group.
For its achievements and contributions to the nation, the VNA has been awarded the Golden Star Order, the Ho Chi Minh Order, the Independence Order- first class, the Resistance War Order- first class, the Fatherland’s Iron Bulwark Order- first class, the Liberation Order- first class, among other noble orders and medals of Vietnam and other countries. The VNA is the only media organization in Vietnam that has been honoured with two Hero titles, namely the Labour Hero of Doi Moi Period and the Hero of the People’s Armed Forces during the Resistance War for National Salvation Period.
The system of domestic and international, economic and foreign service news departments with a strong contingent of reporters and editors constitutes the VNA’s strength. With an integrated network of 63 domestic bureaus and 27 overseas bureaus on five continents, which is its unique advantage, the VNA covers every aspect of life. Everyday its reporters send to the headquarters thousands of stories and reports on socio-economic, cultural, sports, scientific and technological, and environmental issues, making the agency a mainstream information channel on local and world issues.
Diplomatic handshakes, sports competitions, fierce battles, children’s peaceful faces, production activities or daily life of the ethnic people in mountain areas are all captured by the VNA’s photographers with their historic photo collections or video clips. The VNA is a national source of photos and images of Vietnam and the world.
VietnamPlus (http://vietnamplus.vn) is the only local electronic newspaper which delivers the latest and reliable news on Vietnam and the world in four different languages- Vietnamese, English, French and Spanish, helping foreign readers around the world understand the country and its people.
The VNA’s website at http://news.vnanet.vn is a portal for customers to subscribe for the VNA’s news items, photos, audio-visual products and graphic news in either Vietnamese, English, French or Spanish language.
The VNA is leading the local publication market with more than 30 publications, including dailies, weeklies, monthlies, bi-monthlies and various special news bulletins in Vietnamese and foreign languages. Facing challenges of our rapidly growing information society, the VNA’s publications reflect diversity and abundance in both content and format of information on politics, society, culture, sports and science and technology.
Foreseeing future technological trends, the VNA has invested in up-to-date information systems and networks. More than 500 workstations and tens of modern servers working day and night secure the constant information flow from the VNA’s domestic and overseas correspondents and from foreign news wires.
The VNA is in partnership with 42 international and national news agencies as well as international media organizations, including AFP, Antara, AP, Itar-Tass, Kyodo, Notimex, Prensa Latina, Reuters, Xinhua, Yonhap, TNA, Bernama, KPL, AKP, OANA, AsiaNet, among others. The VNA considers information exchange and professional training one of the ways to enhance understanding and friendship between nations.
